Tom Garnett is approaching forty and increasingly convinced his life should be happening somewhere else. A decent career is a must. In a city is non-negotiable. Marriage would be nice too, if only he could sort out his commitment issues.

A decent career is a must. In a city is non-negotiable. Marriage would be nice too, if only he could sort out his commitment issues.
Instead, Tom is stuck in a small town, stumbling from one questionable decision to another, helped — although rarely in the conventional sense — by his best friend Big Mac, flippant mum Beryl, siblings Craig and Jess, and Bonnie, the dog who probably understands him better than any of them.
Then Tom gets an interview at a car dealership in Leeds. A city. At last.
Unfortunately, his second interview begins with him accidentally using the ladies’ toilet and ends with Dawn, the older, fiercely independent sales manager, deciding he looks like a bag of sick and is probably a knob.
Somehow, he gets the job.
And somehow, Dawn eventually falls for him.
What follows is a life Tom could never have planned. Operation Dogging to steal his own dog back. Discovering, within twenty-four hours, that he’s become a father twice. Being Best Man at a wedding where the transport turns out to be a Scooby Doo-type van driven by someone who looks like Austin Powers.
A proposal in Sports Direct with a rusty old key ring followed by a wedding in Puglia involving Vespas, a disgruntled Justin Timberlake, seasick bridesmaids and Kermit and Miss Piggy T-shirts.
Then come the deaths.
Tom’s beloved Bonnie buried by a JCB. His estranged father leaving £25,000 in old banknotes. His cremation attended by a dozen confused Morrisons employees. And an attempt to scatter Dad’s ashes in the Yorkshire Dales that ends with most of him coming home with them.
Certified is a six-part comedy about family, relationships, bad decisions and one Yorkshireman spending his life searching for something better — and finally discovering he might already have it.
